A future for “witches' children”

The challenge

Working with and for these children was our original and main motivation for embarking on our trip to Nigeria. It forms the core and main part of our work. The so-called Secret Cult is a superstition in some regions of Nigeria, which states that certain children have connections to demons or the devil. In these villages, people accuse children of being responsible for illnesses or the death of family members. These children are often tortured or killed, supported by the entire village community.

Our task

Our work aims to help these children and show them that they are valuable and loved. We want to make contact with them and find ways to improve their situation.

One focus of our work is to travel to the villages and show the people who call themselves Christians and believe in the secret cult the dangers and inhumanity of this false belief. We want to show them what the Bible really says and prevent the secret cult from gaining a foothold.

"For he will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicated who have no one to help. He will take pity on the weak and needy and save the needy from death. He will rescue them from oppression and violence, for precious is their blood in his sight." Psalm 72,12-14

Creating connections through practical help

As another part of our work, we want to work with City Ministries to help improve people's lives and make the country sustainable and positive for future generations. In doing so, we will work closely with existing Winward projects. The aim is to enable people from vulnerable political and religious backgrounds to enjoy a better quality of life and build personal relationships. For example, through water and well drilling or forestry and agriculture.

Our tasks will be varied, ranging from making initial contact with the villages to supporting and documenting local projects, as well as day-to-day administrative work in the office.
